U Type vs Straight MoSi2 Heating Elements: Wiring & Use Cases
MoSi2 elements come in two mounting styles that decide how they wire into your furnace: the U-type (single-ended) and the straight / double-ended element. The choice affects wall penetrations, wiring and how easy replacement is.
U-type (single-ended)
Both legs of the U exit the same wall. You only need one insulated wall penetration; the element hangs vertically from the top, and the cold ends (thicker, low-resistance) stay outside the hot zone. Wiring is simple — both terminals are on one side.
- Pros: one-wall installation, easy to hang and replace, clean single-side termination.
- Cons: the U-bend sits inside the chamber (needs clearance), single-side hot field.
Straight / double-ended
The two legs exit opposite walls and the element runs horizontally (or in a through-wall layout). It needs two insulated penetrations and gives a more uniform field across a long chamber.
- Pros: uniform horizontal field, good for long box / tube furnaces.
- Cons: two wall penetrations, more complex support.
