Replacing a MoSi2 Heating Element: Field Guide

When a MoSi2 element fails, replacement is straightforward

Because MoSi2 elements can be run in parallel without matching serial numbers (see old vs new elements), swapping one out in the field is a clean job. Follow this sequence to do it safely and avoid the breakage causes in our breakage guide.

Step 1 — De-energise and cool

Switch off the supply and confirm the furnace is below 100°C before touching anything. The cold end and terminals can still carry dangerous voltage even after shutdown — lock out the breaker.

Step 2 — Remove the failed element

Disconnect the lead wires from the terminal, then free the ceramic holders. Lift the element out by the cold ends only — never grip or bend the hot zone. If it is a U-type, support the bend.

Step 3 — Inspect the seat and hardware

Check the holder grooves for debris or chips and confirm the terminal clamps are not pitted. Replace any cracked ceramic — a bad holder is the usual reason a new element breaks within a week.

Step 4 — Install the replacement

Seat the new element gently; do not force it. Use the support geometry from our installation guide and the U-type/straight notes in U-type vs straight. Both ends must be supported so the hot zone carries no bending load.

Step 5 — Restore power correctly

Reconnect leads, remove the lockout, and bring the furnace up on the reduced-voltage start (see the cold-start procedure). A full-voltage switch-on into a cold element can blow the new one instantly from inrush current.

Which element to fit

Match the grade and diameter to the original — confirm against the MoSi2 spec sheet before ordering. Mixing grades in one circuit is the one thing you must not do.
