MoSi2 Element Breakage: Causes & How to Avoid

MoSi2 is ceramic — treat it like glass

A MoSi2 element is a ceramic composite, not a metal wire. Its hot zone is hard and corrosion-resistant, but brittle. Almost every breakage we see in the field is caused by one of five avoidable mistakes — not by a faulty element.

1. Thermal shock (the #1 cause)

Heating or cooling too fast stresses the hot zone. The worst case is dwelling in the 400–700°C “pesting” zone, where low-temperature oxidation can crack the surface — covered in detail in low-temperature oxidation. Keep ramp rates moderate and do not park the element in that band.

2. Mechanical shock

Dropping an element, tapping it to seat it, or levering it into a tight hole will snap the hot zone. Always hand-place and support it. Our installation guide shows the correct vertical-hanging support that removes bending stress entirely.

3. Poor support / uneven clamping

If only one end is held, the element’s own weight bows the hot zone until it fractures. U-type and straight elements need the right ceramic holders — see U-type vs straight for the support geometry each needs.

4. Contamination

Salt, alkali vapours, or flux that lands on the hot zone can locally attack the protective SiO₂ layer and initiate a crack. Keep the chamber clean and vent process off-gassing away from the elements.

5. Over-temperature

Running an EQ1700 element above its rated 1700°C thins and embrittles the hot zone fast. Respect the grade limits in the full MoSi2 spec sheet.
