Φ3/6 MoSi2 Heating Elements: Small-Diameter, Low-Power Choice

Φ3/6 MoSi2 Heating Elements: Small-Diameter, Low-Power Choice

The Φ3/6 element — a 3 mm hot zone over a 6 mm cold end — is the smallest standard MoSi2 size we supply. It is built for compact chambers where wall space is tight and the total wattage per leg is modest. This page covers what it carries, where it fits, and how to pair it with the right grade.

Specification at a glance

Parameter Φ3/6 value
Hot-zone diameter 3 mm
Cold-end diameter 6 mm
Typical max current (air, steady state) ~200 A
Relative surface load Highest W/cm² per unit size — run it conservatively
Common grades EQ1700, EQ1800
Typical use Compact dental furnaces, small research chambers, lab tube furnaces

Current is a planning ceiling; your transformer and lead-wire rating may set a lower real limit. See the surface-load and current-limits guide for the full diameter table.

Where the Φ3/6 earns its place

Small furnaces do not need the 350–500 A a larger element can deliver. In a dental or jewelry furnace, a Φ3/6 leg keeps the chamber compact and the power supply simple, while still reaching the 1450–1550°C window used for zirconia sintering. It is also a good fit for lab and research tube furnaces where precise, low-mass heating matters more than raw power.

Pairing with a grade

For most Φ3/6 builds we recommend EQ1800 — the 1800°C grade gives headroom well above a 1500°C process, which is exactly what extends element life. If your hold temperature stays below 1650°C, EQ1700 is the economical choice. Read our grade temperature explainer before fixing the grade.

Sizing and fit

Because MoSi2 carries a positive temperature coefficient, Φ3/6 elements self-balance on a shared circuit, so you can mix new and partially-aged legs without replacing the whole set at once. Match the U-bend reach and shank spacing to your furnace drawing — our U-type MoSi2 elements are supplied to your dimensions.

What are Φ 3/6 MoSi2 elements?

Φ 3/6 means a 3 mm hot-zone diameter and 6 mm cold-end diameter; it is the small-diameter, low-power choice for compact furnaces.

Where are Φ 3/6 elements used?

They suit small dental, lab and research furnaces where chamber space and power are limited but temperatures up to 1700–1800°C are still needed.

What grades come in Φ 3/6?

Φ 3/6 elements are offered in EQ1700U, EQ1800U and EQ1850U grades, with the small size limiting total power rather than temperature.

What surface load applies?

Even small elements follow the 4–9 W/cm² MoSi2 surface-load guidance, scaled to the short hot zone.
