- Mechanical shock: SiC cracks easily — never lever against an element to seat it.
- Thermal shock: very fast heat-up / cool-down stresses the brittle rod.
- Over-temperature: running above the rated element temperature accelerates oxidation of the bond.
- Contamination: alkali vapours and some reducing atmospheres attack the surface.
How to extend life
- Support elements so they are free to expand — never clamp the hot zone rigidly.
- Ramp temperature gradually; avoid slamming full power onto a cold furnace.
- Stay within the rated element temperature for your grade.
- Handle by the cold ends only; store flat, never drop.
- Replace in matched sets so aged and new elements share load evenly.
- Keep the furnace atmosphere clean and within the element’s rated range.
