EQ1700U MoSi2 Heating Elements: 1700°C Workhorse Grade
EQ1700U is our most economical MoSi2 grade and the default for furnaces that hold around 1650°C. It covers the bulk of ceramics and heat-treatment work without paying for headroom you do not use. This page explains what EQ1700U is rated for and how to specify it.
Specification at a glance
| Parameter | EQ1700U value |
|---|---|
| Maximum element temperature | 1700°C |
| Typical chamber hold | up to ~1650°C |
| Surface load at 1700°C (planning max) | ~10 W/cm² |
| Atmosphere | Air / oxidising; reduced limit in reducing gas |
| Common diameters | Φ6/12 (most builds), Φ9/18 (high power) |
Surface-load planning values are in the surface-load and current-limits guide; the full data set is in the complete MoSi2 spec sheet.
What EQ1700U is for
If your process sits at or below 1650°C, EQ1700U gives you the rated element at the lowest cost. Typical duties include alumina and general ceramic firing, heat treatment, and many sintering furnaces. It is the grade behind most of our standard U-type MoSi2 elements.
Choosing the grade by hold temperature
Specify by your hold temperature, not the peak. EQ1700U runs comfortably at 1650°C; step up to EQ1800 when you actually need 1700–1800°C chambers (dental, technical ceramics) or want extra life margin, and to EQ1850 for 1750–1800°C lab work. The EQ1700/1800/1850 temperature explainer lays out the full spread, and our MoSi2 vs SiC guide covers when SiC is the better element.
Atmosphere note
The SiO2 protection film only heals in oxidising gas. In reducing atmospheres the usable limit drops — read how atmosphere affects MoSi2 life before specifying for nitrogen, hydrogen or vacuum.

What is EQ1700U MoSi2?
EQ1700U is the 1700°C workhorse grade of MoSi2 heating element, suited to furnaces operating up to 1700°C.
Where is EQ1700U used?
It is used in heat treatment, ceramic and general high-temperature furnaces that do not need the 1800–1850°C range.
Is EQ1700U available in standard diameters?
Yes. EQ1700U comes in diameters such as Φ 3/6, Φ 4/9, Φ 6/12 and Φ 9/18 with standard or bent cold ends.
What surface load applies?
EQ1700U elements are specified at 4–9 W/cm² surface load in an oxidising atmosphere.
