Battery Material Sintering: MoSi2 Element Use in Air & Oxygen

Battery materials need clean, controlled heat

Cathode active materials (NMC, LFP), anode carbons and emerging solid-state electrolytes are calcined and sintered in tightly controlled atmospheres — often air or oxygen for cathodes, inert for some anodes. Any metallic contamination or temperature drift shows up directly in cell performance, so the element must be clean and stable.

Temperature and grade

Material / step Temperature Recommended element
LFP / cathode calcination (air) 700–900°C SiC or EQ1700 MoSi2
NMC cathode sintering (air/O2) 850–1000°C EQ1700 MoSi2
Solid-state / high-temp electrolyte 1000–1400°C EQ1800 MoSi2

Air and oxygen are MoSi2-friendly

Unlike hydrogen or vacuum, oxidising atmospheres are exactly what MoSi2 needs to maintain its protective silica skin — the limits are in our atmosphere guide. That makes it a natural fit for cathode sintering. For inert-atmosphere anode work, confirm the duty with us.

Scale and uniformity

Battery production runs continuous or batch furnaces where zone uniformity controls material consistency. Element layout for tube and pusher furnaces is in our tube furnace guide; size the bank from the surface load guide and quantity calculator.

Summary

MoSi2 (EQ1700, and EQ1800 for higher-temp electrolytes) is well suited to battery-material sintering in air or oxygen, where it stays clean and self-healing. Manage inert-atmosphere anode steps with care. Full grade data is on the spec sheet.

Why specify with HeatingDriver

Why specify with HeatingDriver — HeatingDriver is a manufacturer and exporter of MoSi2 (molybdenum disilicide) heating elements with nearly 20 years of experience. We supply EQ1700U / EQ1800U / EQ1850U grades for 1700–1850°C, free drawing review, custom sizes and shapes, and technical support for furnace builders worldwide. Browse our MoSi2 heating elements.

Can MoSi2 elements sinter battery materials?

Yes. Battery-material (cathode/anode) sintering is done in air or oxygen using MoSi2 elements that tolerate oxidising high-temperature service.

Which grade for battery-material sintering?

Depending on the target temperature, EQ1700U, EQ1800U or EQ1850U are selected, with many cathode processes within the EQ1800U range.

Why oxidising atmosphere for battery materials?

Many battery cathode materials are sintered in air or oxygen, which also lets the MoSi2 protective silica layer form and extend element life.

What surface load is used?

Battery-material furnaces use a MoSi2 surface load of 4–9 W/cm², set by chamber size and throughput.
